The Trend of Cozy Mysteries

What is the market for cozy mysteries like? One way to gauge it is to see what people are looking for online. Google Trends is a great tool for this kind of analysis. I looked at the trend of cozy mystery searches on Google over the last 5 years.

After downloading the data, I did some straightforward analysis: since 2020, interest in “Cozy Mystery” searches have grown steadily in the U.S. On average, people are searching for the genre about 60% more often in 2024 than they did in 2020. Good news for those of us writing in 2025 and beyond.

Unsurprisingly, cozy mysteries are most popular in the fall, when average search interest is at its highest. Summer follows closely behind, while winter and spring are quieter. This lines up with the idea that readers turn to cozy mysteries during colder months leading into the holiday season, or when settling in for longer reading sessions.

TL;DR:

  • The trend is climbing year over year.

  • Fall is peak cozy mystery season, with a noticeable bump compared to other times of the year.

This validates what I and a lot of others think. It's nice to have data to back up the feels, though, you know?
